Dacia Maraini opens this lecture with her poems dedicated to the woods, where nature becomes a voice and a memory, before moving on to Italo Calvino’s The Baron in the Trees, the boy who chose never to come down to the ground again. A journey that combines poetry and fiction to illustrate how literature has always found, in the woods and among the branches, a place to think, to resist, and to imagine a different world.

Biography

Dacia Maraini is a writer, poet, playwright, and essayist, and one of the most influential voices in contemporary Italian literature. Her work spans fiction, poetry, theater, and nonfiction, addressing themes such as memory, human rights, and the status of women. Among her best-known books are La lunga vita di Marianna Ucrìa (Campiello Prize, 1990) and Buio (Strega Prize, 1999). Particularly significant in her career is Vita mia (2025), a work very dear to the author in which she recounts the dramatic experience she endured as a child in concentration camps in Japan. Her works have been translated into more than twenty-five languages. Her cultural and literary contributions have earned her prestigious international awards, including seven honorary degrees, four of which were conferred in Italy and three in the United States.
