There are many ways to tell the story of humanity; one—the least common—is to recount the incredible intertwining of wheat and humankind. In this unconventional, intense, and entertaining talk, we’ll explore how and why the human species—willingly or not—made a pact with wheat, and how and why this pact gave rise to the culture that defines us today. An ancient culture that defines us, yet one that for millennia has also imprisoned us in hunger, disease, and the premature death of children. In short, a journey through the wheat fields to analyze our path—which is nothing more than a succession of dreams that turn into nightmares, from which we can escape only by dreaming again: wheat is the stuff our dreams and nightmares are made of. So, let’s talk about it.

Biography

Antonio Pascale, born in Naples (1966), lived in Caserta, and now lives and works in Rome. Precisely because he is from the South—and also out of fear of losing his job—he holds many roles: writer, essayist, television writer (for Belve) and playwright, science communicator, and agricultural inspector for the Ministry of Agriculture, now known as MASAF. He is the artistic director of ColtivaTO, the first agriculture festival held every two years in Turin; for Il Foglio, he oversees the website and newsletter Agrifoglio, which focuses on innovation in agriculture. Among his many books—and to avoid overwhelming the reader with too much information—we’ll mention just two: La foglia di fico. Storie di alberi, donne e uomini (Einaudi), a finalist for the Campiello Prize, and Cose umane (Einaudi).
